En

An en is a unit of measurement, half the size of an em, relative to the size of the font; therefore, in a typeface set at a font-size of 16px, one en is 8px.

On the left, a glyph sitting inside an em square, with arrows illustrating half of its total width. On the right, an en dash, occupying almost the same half width.

The en dash is so named because its width, in theory, is one en—although in many fonts the en dash is somewhat narrower.
