Rag

The rag refers to the irregular edge of an unjustified text block. “Ragged right” is another term for left-justified text, and “ragged left” means right-justified.

A paragraph of text, with the rag highlighted on its right-hand side, demonstrating the negative horizontal space on each line of type between the last glyph on the line and the right side of the bounding box.

Center-aligned type has two rags: both left and right. Fully justified text has no rag, since glyphs touch both the right and left sides of the text block.
