Stroke

The stroke is one of the main lines that make up the appearance of a character. The term is derived from the penmanship inherent in hand lettering—and is therefore more metaphorical when talking about type.

The letter s set in a relatively high-contrast bold italic serif. The stroke that runs throughout—usually invisible—is highlighted above the character.

When we talk about contrast in a typeface (or lettering or calligraphy), we’re referring to the difference between the thinnest parts and thickest parts of the stroke.
